Should Heath Ledger be Rewarded?
By Just Stupid on Jul 20, 2008 in Stupid Celebrities
We received this submission from a faithful reader (soon to be regular contributor) and couldn’t agree more….
Pouring adulation on Heath Ledger is JUST STUPID. With the release of "The Dark Knight," the next Batman movie, there has been tremendous admiration for Ledger’s performance as "The Joker." Today, several renowned movie reviewers are anticipating he will be nominated for a best actor award.
I don’t get it. As we all know, Ledger used prescription medications to both help him "get into character" as well as "get out of character." "Mr. Heath Ledger died as the result of acute intoxication by the combined effects of oxycodone, hydrocodone, diazepam, temazepam, alprazolam and doxylamine," medical examiner’s spokeswoman Ellen Borakove said in a news release. WAIT A MINUTE. So, it is OK to admire an actor, who uses prescription medications obtained illegally to help him perform on screen, but it’s not OK for Barry Bonds, Rafael Palmero, Jason Giambi, and Bill Romanowski to use steroids and HGH to enhance their performance?
THIS IS JUST STUPID, the man left a darling daughter behind to be raised without the support of a father. We should not support, elevate or nominate Ledger’s performance any higher than we would those scoundrel athletes. All of them deny using drugs of any type, and all of them are deceptive in their representations to their fans (you know, the people that ultimately pay them.) The only award Ledger should be eligible for is something from the WWF, where deception and cheating is part of the overall facade.

I really don’t see the connection between sports and acting here. The list of artistic folks who have used some form of controlled substance or other is long. There is no evidence anyone who doesn’t use these substances is a poorer performer. Artistic endeavor is subjective. In sports you win or loose and the rules of the game are more absolute. We may say an actor or other performer who uses drugs for performance is exercising poor judgement. But to draw a connection between this and an athlete who uses drugs against the rules of a sport to gain a clear competitive advantage is to use fuzzy logic indeed.

You have done no research. Ok, you know what was in the toxicology reports. Do you know that he had been suffering from crazy insomnia for years? Do you know that he had actually received all of his medication legally? Do more research and don’t take away from a man’s complete creative genius because of whatever he did in his personal life. Heath Ledger’s portrayal of the Joker was not only one of the best portrayals of any comic book character but I think one of the best portrayals of any character in cinematic history. To take away from his performance because he had taken some pills is a disgrace to his talent. The creativity with which he portrayed the Joker is nothing short of amazing and your post is disgusting. Heath Ledger is unfortunately gone, but I will say what a way to go. Oscar material for sure.
