Monster Low Carb Drink Bad for Diabetics?
By craig on Aug 13, 2008 in Stupid Companies
Monster Low Carb is an energy drink that is loaded with taurine and some surprising ingredients to boost your energy. Surprising if you are a diabetic to say the least. I have tried a few different Monster drinks over the past several weeks, they are very tasty, however within minutes I began to feel ill. Didn’t like the feeling at all.
I happen to be a type 2 diabetic and thought maybe I was being affected by the sugar and carbs (although that has never happened to be before when drinking energy drinks or any other over indulgence of carbs & sugars). So my brother-in-picked up the low carb monster drink for me. I drank about half a can and the same thing happened to me. I poured the other half down the sink. My brother-in-law thought maybe I was having a bad reaction to the Taurine. We decided to check the ingredients to see how much Taurine was actually in one of these drinks.
We got our answer and one big surprise. The usual list of "facts" is there…
Lo-Carb Monster Supplement Facts (serving size – 8 fl. oz.)
Calories: 10
Total Carb: 3 g (3 g from sugar) – 1%
Riboflavin: 1.7 mg – 100%
Niacin: 20 mg – 100%
Vitamin B6: 2 mg – 100%
Vitamin B12: 6 mcg – 100%
Sodium: 180 mg – 8%
Taurine: 1000 mg
Panax Ginseng: 200 mg
Percent daily values are based on a 2,000 calorie diet – Servings per container: 2
But what we also discovered is that where they list the ingredients they have something called the "energy blend" and the 2nd item is GLUCOSE! If we calculated this all correctly, there is over 2000mg of glucose in each can! Now if you know anything about diabetes, the last thing a diabetic needs to be drinking is glucose! Why is there no warning for this? How could a beverage loaded with glucose be considered low carb and low calorie? Not a doctor and not a scientist, but this seems just stupid to me!

Glucose and maltodextrin are figured into the sugars listed within the monster, 2000mg is 2 grams of carbs. Giving you roughly 1 Gram for maltodextrin. On a normal sized can thats 4 grams of glucose and 2 of other sugars…..
saying that 4 grams of glucose is making you sick is far fetched even for the completely insulin dependent.

don’t drink the s@#% and never will! some people just don’t care about themselves, well i’m not perfect but i’m not stupid either and with all the bad publicity being said about these types of drinks you would have to be stupid to buy the next big energy drink, or maybe they are looking for early retirement? if you know what i mean! cheers

haha.. seriously, 2000mg is only 2 grams.. 2 grams of sugar are not going to make your blood sugar go sky high.. ha, oh man.. talk about dumbbbb.

LOL I drink it all the time and I have type two. Dude….I don’t get sick. I went to check it out and apparantly I have too many t-cells in the body. It eats up the sickness so I don’t feel it.

OMG, there is roughly 13 grams of sugar in 1 tablespoon of sugar, yo. The low carb monster has 6 grams of sugar per serving and there is 2 servings. so thats about a tablespoon of sugar in one can which, to say the least, is less than what most people take in their am coffee. I’ve had Gastic Bypass and trust me, its not suagr in the Energy drink that made you sick bro. Caffine has been provin to stimulate insulin production. Maybe thats what gave you your dizzy spell.

Craig, you are an idiot. Take some nutritional science classes man. They are not hiding anything. lo-carb cuts down the simple sugar’s that are in the non-lo-carb can. It’s significantly less and is definitely better for you! You’re getting sick because of a different ingredient.
That amount of sugar is not enough to get you sick.

im diabetic (2) and I replace a meal a day with monster low carb. the vitamin B12 is great for me because my med (metformin) is known for depleting it. Also, there are apparently a lot of new studies coming out correlating diabetes and the benefit of vitamins b6 and 12.
And I like the buzz from the stimulants
I feel sick if I don’t have one lol…which is probably not good either but I feel great and eat very healthy otherwise.

I recently found out that I was type 2 as well. I did some experimenting and after some testing, I found that with me (maybe not for others) my morning fasting bloodsugar count will go down 10-15 points 15-25 minutes after drinking a Lo-Carb Monster. Why -I don’t know. I know that I am becoming a believer that this is way better for me than the “zero cal” crap that I’ve been sucking down filled with chemicals like aspartame. It’s probably not the healthiest drink but make someone sick….. seriously? If you can’t handle a “Monster buzz”, stick to drinks like unflavored water and sugarfree lemonade, Ned Flanders!

Im a type one…and once again, the type 2 diabetics are both ignorant and frankly…how stupid are you…Lo-Carb Monster does not have enough sugars, carbs, glucose or anything else (other than the energy ingredients themselves) to do anything…unless…u drink maybe 10 or 20 of them…diabetes is treated based on carb counting…jeeze…morons u are all

I have always been in excellent physical shape (male, 69 inches tall, 148 lbs, rigorous aerobic exercise 10-20 hours/week, weight training), but I was still diagnosed with type-2 diabetes 6 months ago. I was dead tired all the time, felt dizzy and faint, had problems with balance and concentration, experienced numbness/tingling/burning feet and fingers, itchy skin on legs, muscle cramps, upset stomach, bowel pain, etc. Went on a somewhat strict diabetic diet emphasizing high fiber, and supplemented my diet with about 1 to 3 sixteen-ounce Monster low-carb energy drinks (in the black cans with blue lettering) per day. Now, I feel about 90% like my pre-diabetes self. I am so happy and relieved!

You can find all the answers you need from any “expert”, just ask them. Monster Lo-Carb is my choice for an energy boost, my choice for calorie control, and my choice for lo-carb flavor. If you need nutritional information for it, it’s on the can. If you need to know exactly how much Glucose or Taurine is bad for you, ask a nutritionist. Finally, if it adversely affects you, “Don’t Drink It!” Ahh, simple answers to life’s complex questions….

I’ve been a type 1 for almost 2 years now and I’ve had the opposite experience with these drinks, they actually boost my blood sugar just enough when it’s low, much better than taking glucose tablets. However I do need to be careful as sometimes it can send me up to 140-150mg/dL. You just have to try it and see what it does to your sugar level and make it work.

soo… i have diabetes(i) and i havnt ever had any energy drink that doesnt say sugar-free on the front, and then i seen the low-carb monster. before i was diagnosed i used to have regular monsters, and after looking at the facts posted here it looks like theres less sugar/carbs in low-carb monster than in the average chocolate bar… which i eat once in a while too.. i think im going to try this low-carb monster and i hope i really like it, i miss monster

there are lots of energy drinks that diabetics type 1 and 2 can have, well there isnt alot compared to normal energy drinks but there are sugar free energy drinks

That isn’t much sugar but I’ve had similar reactions. It feels like an insulin spike but I haven’t been able to confirm this. The symptoms I get are shakiness, weakness, cold sweats, fatigue and activity intolerance, and sometimes significant hunger.
But that has only happened a handful of times. Most of the time, I end up running on the treadmill for an hour and don’t feel very tired.
I’m not diabetic but I’ve had a few run-ins with hypoglycemia. I don’t have blood glucose monitoring but I have been screened every few years (regular checkup dipstick, not the fasting or glucose test). I’ve run a glucose/keto stick when feeling symptomatic but nothing comes up. I’m only talking about the lo-carb Monster BTW. I’ve had a similar reaction with a regular energy drink of another brand that used fructose but no dextrose. I’ve never had a problem with a sucrose-based drink.

Ii think what this guy is experiencing is a “high” as if he had taken drugs, it happens to me i cant drink monster because it makes me become agitated, nervous and with an strange feeling. Just dont drink it and leave your other illness aside when experiencing the Monster effect. Its cheaper than coke.
geoff | Feb 18, 2011 | Reply
now they have an “absolutely zero”.. no carb/cal/ sugar. its really good. and remember, all the different Monster styles have different results. some of the Purple and orange ones just taste like juice – they have a lot more sugar. I wouldnt drink monster if i wasnt drinking the blue (lo-carb) or the absolutely zero… too much sugar even if youre not a diabetic…

HA HA!
I got to this page straight from google. I was laughing away at the post of a diabetic drinking energy drinks, but I’d totally misunderstood the page!
Apparently it’s supposed to be about the company being stupid! I thought it was Craig the fu#king retard’s post that was featuring in ‘thisisjuststupid.com’!

Just FYI, 2000 mg is equal to 2g–an almost negligible amount (8kcal), even for a diabetic. Far more concerning would be the rest of the ingredients…
