The fact is that shoe manufacturers do not carry enough of a selection in wide width. The majority of the time, when I find a shoe that I really like and want, they either don't have it in my size or if they do have my size & I ask if they have it in wide width, I am told no, sorry. I just bought shoes for my daughters wedding & they don't come in wide width, so I am trying to find a shoe stretcher because they fit length wise but are snug width wise. Once you wear them for a few hours they pinch or hurt. A little stretching is all it needs. I've never noticed the difference in the appearance of the shoe, after it was stretched a bit. Tennis shoes don't need them, but good dress shoes (real leather) will use them. Leather will shrink if you store them for a length of time. I use a shoe stretcher to keep them in proper size.
