Pollution and Drinking Water

We need to take care of our environment.  We’ve been saying it for decades.  It’s just stupid that we do not make this a priority in the world around us.

Access to clean water and proper sanitation is a huge problem. 1.3 billion people around the world do not have access to clean water – 10,000 of these people will die daily because of a water or sanitation-related disease. Contaminated drinking water not only carries the bacteria that cause pneumonia, but also increases the chances of developing diarrhea.

Diseases spread through water – 90% of wastewater flows into water sources without treatment in developing countries. This is best shown through the case of diarrhea, which is primarily spread through contaminated water in the developing world. Governments and non government organizations around the world have been putting money into clean water and sanitation for years. CARE has helped 10 million people in 30 countries get safe drinking water since the 1950s, and in 2003, 3 million people in 29 countries were able to access clean water because of CARE’s work. UNDP (United Nations Development Program) has a budget of $900 million for sustainable water development.

However, today, clean water is still unavailable to over a billion of the world’s people. The disparity between the rich and the poor is shocking – in the United States, the flush of a toilet uses more water than a person living in Africa might use during the course of an entire day.

I think GE gave less money than that and was able to do much more good. They’d also donated a few water treatment containment operational systems (Was called COPS but I cant remember the term now).

I still dont see how me flushing a toilet has any bearing on anything other than guilting me into some political action. Theres no reason they cant get rid of their corrupt governments and do things to change their own lives. The Ethiopian famine of the 80s was caused by a government rule of “no hoarding allowed”, so in a light drought there was nothing stored to eat. Dont assume poor people are just stupid and wake up to not find any food or water one day.

I think the biggest source of water pollution is Industries. Industrial sector is consuming vast amount of water. Major problem with industrial water usage is a huge percentage out of this water consumed leads to production of wastewater which may or may not degrade quality of nearby resource
