Ads Not Allowed in Maine Cemeteries

Every state has dumb laws. Some of those are laws that have been on record for a really long time and just don’t apply to modern life anymore. Others are laws that you really have to wonder why they were ever created in the first place. For example, did you know that there’s a law in Maine that prevents you from placing advertisements in cemeteries.

The law actually covers a wide variety of things that you aren’t allowed to do in the cemetery in Maine. For example, you aren’t allowed to build a new building on the cemetery property according to the law. You also aren’t allowed to litter in the cemetery. And you aren’t allowed to remove bodies from the graves of the cemetery. Yes, these are all part of the same Maine law (called the Prohibited Acts).

It’s just interesting that it needs to be included in the law that you can’t post any signs or otherwise advertise in the cemetery. Who the heck would you advertise to? The dead obviously aren’t going to get the message that you’re putting up. And advertising to people who are visiting their dead relatives at the cemetery is just plain tacky.

Then again, maybe it’s something worth making into a law because it seems like it would prevent the people who operate the cemetery from advertising what they offer on site. Sadly, this is something that some cemeteries do. And apparently it’s been an issue for a long time because the International Cemetery, Cremation and Funeral Association has an article online that dates back to 1908 discussing the proper way to advertise a cemetery. Back then they felt like it was okay to advertise on street cars and through souvenir post cards but even then they didn’t recommend posting ads in the cemetery itself.

Would you ever purchase something that was advertised in a cemetery?

That’s pretty funny. But every state has its own strange legislation.

For example, I live in Ohio and it’s illegal to fish for whales on Sunday. LOL What!
