Afraid to Get a Hearing Aid?
By Just Stupid on Oct 22, 2009 in Stupid People

I was just reading an article about a man who is afraid to get a hearing aid. He is worried that people will see him as mentally inferior if he is wearing a hearing aid. There are two things about this which seem incredibly stupid:
- The man probably needs the hearing aid. If this man is suffering from hearing loss then he probably really needs the hearing aid. Worrying about what other people are going to think about him seems a little bit ridiculous in comparison with the need to be able to hear.
- There are actually people out there who treat people with hearing loss as mentally inferior. Comments on this report indicate that some people with hearing aids have actually suffered the exact fate that this man is worried about. That anyone in society would consider mild hearing loss to be a disability that relates in any way to mental incapacity is just plain stupid.
The good news for this guy is that there are a lot of small and stylish hearing aids to choose from. He can select one that can barely be seen so he can get over his fear and avoid any problems from stupid people.

It’s a sad thought to think that hearing loss would be looked down upon in today’s society as a mental handicap. I know more than enough people with perfect hearing that still have no idea what it means to listen making their ability to hear a moot point anyway. Thanks for this post.

To add to this, what I think is stupid is the cost of hearing aids in general. Rip off.

I’m aware that one reason some people resist getting hearing aids is fear of being seen as “old.” However, this is the first time I have heard of fear of being viewed as “mentally inferior” if you have hearing aids.
