Department of Energy – Lost Its Way!

department of energyWe received this email and have verified most of it…

Does anybody out there have any memory of the reason given for the establishment of the Department of Energy during the Carter Administration? Anybody? Anything? No? Didn’t think so.

Bottom line . . we’ve spent several hundred billion dollars in support of an agency the reason for which not one person who reads this can remember.  Ready?

It was very simple, and at the time everybody thought it very appropriate.   The Department of Energy (located appropriately at 1000 Independence Ave) was instituted 8-04-1977 to lesson our dependence on foreign oil.  Pretty efficient, huh?

And now it is 2008, 31 years later and the budget for this necessary department is at $25 BILLION PER YEAR, they have 16,000 federal employees, and approximately 100,000 contract employees and look at the wonderful job they have done!  This is where you slap you head and say THIS IS JUST STUPID!

THINK BEFORE YOU VOTE !

After the gas shortages of the early 1970s, Carter established the department of energy to help promote alternative sources of fuel and lessen America’s dependency on oil. Four years later, Ronald Reagan was elected president, loaded the department with pro-oil lobbyists and stripe away alternative fuel incentives. Today we’re spending $2 billion a week fighting a war to feed our gas habit. This is just stupid.

What I think is stupid is that native English speakers don’t learn to speak or write their own language correctly. Lesson is a noun and is something that one teaches; lessen means to reduce. We can’t “lesson” our dependence on foreign oil!

Sara – you must be a teacher. Thanks for pointing out our mistake. Do you have a blog we can read?

Is there still a process in place that allow “We the people” to correct this insanity?

Oh, and just a note, the word used by Just Stupid was lessEn, not lessOn, and it is absolutely correct in this context. I certainly hope Sara is NOT a teacher! Yikes! No wonder we have rampant nonsense governmental machines wringing us dry, we don’t pay very close attention to anything! WAKE UP, AMERICA! Let us LESSEN our pain and take back our rights!

    Thesaurus: lessen
    verb
To grow or cause to grow gradually less: abate, decrease, diminish, drain, dwindle, ebb, let up, peter (out), rebate, reduce, tail away (or off), taper (off). See increase/decrease.
To make less severe or more bearable: allay, alleviate, assuage, comfort, ease, lighten2, mitigate, palliate, relieve. See increase/decrease.

Daring, Sara was commenting on the original post, not the comment.

In the 4th paragraph he used lesson, not lessen.
