Student Suspended for Sketching Gun

Gun Sketch - NOT the actual sketch from the student in this post.

Gun Sketch – NOT the actual sketch from the student in this post.

From the The Arizona Republic:

Parents angered by the suspension of their child for drawing a picture of a gun on an assignment paper are questioning the Chandler Unified School District’s policies dealing with such incidents.  The Payne Junior High eighth-grader, along with another student, was suspended Monday for five days. Parents Paula and Ben Mosteller were able to get the suspension reduced to three after meeting with school officials.

The uproar over the drawing, which the student turned in with a school assignment, cuts to the question of what constitutes a "threat."  Craig Gilbert, Chandler director of secondary education, said there’s a range of punishment administrators can hand down for "implied threats," ranging from a parent conference to suspension and expulsion.

Gilbert confirmed another student also was suspended in connection with the incident but would not go into detail because of student privacy laws.  School officials have put the student’s sketch in his file, which is not open to the public. And since school officials did not call the police, there’s no public police record.

What is going on here?  We have a teenage son.  We have seen many sketches like this in our house over the years.  We think he is a great artist.  The fact that these two students from Payne Junior High were punished so severely for their work is Just Stupid!  Over reaction run amok.

Notice, John, how it states beneath the picture that it is not what the kid drew. And it depends on what kind of kid drew it whether or not they should suspend him.

This kid drew a gun on his paper for a reason. Not because it was the asignment, but for a reason. I can only speculate (same w/ the faculty) that this was meant as a threat to the teacher.

Sean, it doesn’t matter. How is it a threat to the teacher? Art is an expression. Some people, when they doodle, draw guns. It’s not a big deal. These people need to get lives, and get over it.

    John READ THE ARTICLE, STUPID.

I bet if the kid drew a condom and two guys having sex the teachers would praise and reward him as a hero, and get him “Pole Position” at the gay pride parade.

Oh wow, that totally has more than one meaning.

Uhmmm… If the assignment was to draw a gun on a piece of paper, why else would he turn it in with an assignmet unless it was a threat?

And for those people who didn’t read the entire article, the drawing posted WITH this article clearly states it was NOT the original drawing.

dude, dont be silly ive drawn guns over school text books and homework before, i wasn’t punished for it as a threat, for doing graffiti yes, but never as a threat. Today kids are exposed to such things everyday, in games and on tv. This is no different from a girl drawing a pony.

It is sad that schools restric kids so damn much. And its not a thrat that a kid draws a **** gun in class. If he drew a bunch of robots destroying the world does that mean he’s already got half a robot army in his basement. NO! Same with the gun… it’s no big deal. i draw guns all the time. I like them. And i am the last person you’d expect to kill som1.
