We Support ANWR – Do You?

First… do you know what ANWR is?  ANWR = arctic national wildlife refuge.  We recieved this email, did a little research and decided to post it.  We put it on Just Stupid because we want to get people’s attention that not becoming independent of Middle East oil IS just stupid!  You can download this presentation as a PDF here.

And some perspective…

Note where the proposed development area is…

(It’s in the "ANWR coastal plain")

This is what the objectors show you when they talk about ANWR

…And they are right… these are photographs of ANWR

Isn’t ANWR beautiful?  Why should we drill here (and destroy) this beautiful place?

Well… that’s not exactly the truth. Do you remember the map? The map showed that the proposed drilling area is in the ANWR coastal plain.

Do those photographs look like a coastal plain to you? What’s going on here? The answer is simple…

That is not where they are wanting to drill! This is what the proposed exploration area actually looks like in the winter.

And this is what it actually looks like in the summer

Here are a couple screen shots from Google earth.

As you can see, the area where they are talking about drilling is a barren wasteland.

Oh… and they say that they are concerned about the effect on the local wildlife…

Here is a photo (shot during the summer) of the "depleted wildlife" situation created by drilling around Prudhoe Bay*… don’t you think that the caribou really hate that drilling?

Here’s that same spot during the winter.

20080627ANWR14

Hey, this bear seems to really hate the pipeline near Prudhoe Bay*…

*The Prudhoe Bay area accounts for 17% of U.S. domestic oil production

Now that you know the truth, what are you going to do about it?

You can start by forwarding this to everyone you know… so that they will know the truth.  And consider supporting ANWR.ORG.

How many oil spills occur in the area & will occur if there is drilling on the coast ? We can’t forget that the production/use of oil is a cause of global warming. Also, who knows what kind of toxins are in the animals that live there.

There are only think of money. I didn’t realize it was so large and how much potential of oil that they want to suck..

Eva i see you are a “believer”. Man-made Global Warming is a theory only. It is not proven fact. You do realize the world has been warmer and cooler than it is now? It has been warmer at times prior to man’s existance. Tell me who was using oil then. Nice straw man argument with the toxin statement. You bring it up and obviously are just throwing crap out there hoping it will stick. When gas gets to 5 bucks America will stand up and we will drill. I am betting you did not check out the entire post. I am right aren’t I ?

I posted this as well and forwarded the email to my email buds…the masses need to see these pics and see for themselves that the ANWR drilling brouhaha is completely bogus.

He has a valid point about the oil spills however. And remember that ecosystems are pretty delicate. If the pipeline alters the migratory pattern of the wildlife, it can have far reaching effects elsewhere.

Also remember what you THINK is a barren wasteland is usually full of life you can’t actually SEE! You think because it looks like a wasteland, it’s not as important as the rest of the refuge. Do you have a degree to know all the habits of the wildlife in the area?

I’ll agree that environmentalists go off half cocked a lot of the time. The seal hunts in newfoundland and labrador being a prime example (what the hell stupid hunter would CLUB a baby seal to death as visciously as PETA and Greenpeace have said happens? it’s staining and ruining the fur, which is a valuable freaking thing!). Don’t make yourself as bad as them. Present something a bit more concrete than what you have, then I’ll be more apt to side with you.

Big deal! According to USGS The North Slope of Alaska has total reserves of 15 billion barrels of oil. About 2 days worth at current US consumption rates.
    Hardly worth arguing about.
