Arizona Police Arrest 9 Frat Members in Milk Vomit Car Crash

Arizona State University police have arrested fraternity members they believe vomited into traffic below a footbridge, causing a car accident that left two with minor injuries. Tempe police Sgt. Steve Carbajal said the vomit caused one car’s driver to stop, and another car smashed into it from behind. A woman and her 6-year-old daughter suffered minor injuries.
Police believe eight members of Delta Sigma Phi were challenged to a "milk chug" Sept.22 and a ninth member acted as pledge master, said Jay Spradling, an assistant chief of police at ASU.
A national director of the fraternity visiting Tempe assisted police in contacting fraternity members, he said.
Nine Delta Sigma Phi members were soon arrested on suspicion of disorderly conduct, a misdemeanor offense.
ASU officials are investigating whether the "milk chug" challenge could be a hazing offense. If it proves to be, the university could remove fraternity members from ASU, according to the student code of conduct.
Delta Sigma Phi is currently on probation and not allowed to participate in Greek and university activities, ASU spokeswoman Julie Newberg said.
Fraternity members are also subject to further civil and university disciplinary actions.
Though the police investigation is closed, university officials are continuing to probe the incident, Newberg said.
