Tourist Attraction: Seattle’s Gum Wall
By Just Stupid on Apr 13, 2010 in Stupid Travel

There is a tourist attraction in Seattle that really just shouldn’t exist. It’s the Seattle Gum Wall. Just like the name suggests, this is a big wall where people come to put their used gum. Then other people come to look at the massive wall of used gum.
The wall is located in an alley near Pike Place Market, the popular landmark attraction that nearly every Seattle visitor goes to visit. People used to get angry that they had to wait in line at the theater here and would stick their gum to the wall to show off their disgust. The people working here knew then, way back in the ’90s, that this was disgusting. They scraped the wall clean more than once. However, the gum just kept piling up.
And somehow, it ended up becoming an attraction in and of itself. Admittedly, some people do really cool things with their gum. They create little works of art out of the colors from their chewing gum. They sign their work in gum signatures.
Still, we’re talking about gum here. Chewed gum that has been inside of someone’s mouth. And there it is, collecting bacteria and grime for all to see. This is one of those tourist attractions that just shouldn’t even exist and yet somehow it is a popular stop for people to see.

It is disgusting and horrible. I do not know why it could be an attraction for tourists?

Suroz, I suspect people think it looks cool, even though over-analyzing may lead to thoughts of germs and such. LOL.
I’ve never even heard of this thing until I saw your post.

Hmmm…I have been to Seattle many times, and have definintely been to Pike Place a number of times as well. Never heard of a gum wall. However, I will be going back in a couple of weeks, might have to make a stop….
